Canadian wildfires are affecting the country's timber industry

25-08-2023

Wildfires are not only exacerbating Canada's drought, they are also taking a toll on the country's timber industry.

A lumber expert at Corton Capital says supplies will be reduced in the long run, especially since wildfires have consumed more than 10 million acres of forest in just four provinces.

It's going to affect everything, pulp mills, plywood mills, anything that consumes wood," says John Ducanson. You can't run a sawmill or a pulp mill unless you have people working in it. When the town is evacuated, most of the employees work at the local mills, and they'll have to close the mills. That will have a very significant impact."

He fears the fires will cause some of the larger mills to close and ultimately affect exports to the United States, Canada's largest lumber market.
