B.C. Announces Amendments to Lumber Regulations to Restrict Log Exports

16-12-2023

Changes are being made to the Manufactured Forest Products Regulation in the interior of B.C. (British Columbia), Canada, to expand manufacturing requirements for cedar and cypress lumber exports. These changes will come into effect on February 1, 2024 and will require Interior mills to fully produce harvested cedar and cypress wood.

Existing regulations allow "minimally processed" cedar and cypress to be exported from the Interior without further manufacturing.

The Independent Wood Processors Association of B.C. welcomed the legislative changes and said in a statement that restricting log exports would create opportunities for high-value manufacturing and retain more forestry jobs in the province.
