As a key link in the supply chain between Swedish sawmills and their international markets, Sweden's Gothenburg Timber Terminal has said it has strengthened the port's overall value proposition and its role as a full-service port for the forest industry to meet the growing demand for exports from Sweden's forestry industry and to help the port become Sweden's **Forest Port, it has been announced.

Antti Laakso, Senior Business Development Manager at the Port of Gothenburg Authority, explains that being able to offer efficient transhipment of sawn wood products is an important addition to the Port of Gothenburg's existing forest products handling, which also includes paper, cardboard and pulp.

As Sweden's timber exports are booming, the country's sawn timber set the country's second highest ever timber sawn timber export record in 2022 with a 9% year-on-year increase to 13.8 million cubic metres.

According to data released by our Customs, in the first nine months of this year, Sweden's total timber exports to China exceeded 690,000 cubic metres, a sharp increase of 77 per cent year-on-year; the total value of exports reached 968.77 million yuan, an increase of 39.2 per cent year-on-year.

Among them, January-April this year has become up to now Sweden's timber concentrated in the month of arrival. And February even became the same period in 2022 and 2023, the largest number of arrivals, more than 120,000 cubic metres.

It is worth noting that although January-February coincided with the Spring Festival holiday, but the number of Swedish timber arrivals did not decrease because of the holiday. And from the quarterly import data, the first quarter by virtue of more than 330,000 cubic metres of import share, to become so far the import volume ** quarter.

From the average price, and the same period last year fluctuations in the situation is different, the first nine months of this year, the import of Swedish timber prices have remained stable, and the overall lower than last year's level. And in the case of market demand failed to show significant growth, it is expected that the price of imported Swedish timber throughout the year will remain on the low side.

In China's timber export trade can achieve year-on-year growth of 77 per cent in this point of view, Sweden's timber trade is growing, but also thanks to Sweden's demand for timber export solutions continue to grow, in particular, the importance of port terminals on the transport of wood products processing capacity. With the increasing capacity of Swedish ports, Sweden's timber exports will become more efficient in the future, and the timber trade with the global market will become even closer.
