Forest fire destruction in Europe is set to hit a record this year

13-09-2022

The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reports that from January 1 to August 13, 2022, about 660,000 hectares, or about 1.63 million acres, of land in Europe have been damaged by wildfires.

That's 56% higher than the 420,913 hectares recorded in the same period of 2017. The scale of destruction this year is set to be the worst since records began in 2006. EFFIS predicts that if 2022 follows a similar path to 2017, more than 1 million hectares of land in Europe will be destroyed. In 2017, it reached 988,087 hectares.

The system showed "very extreme", "extreme" and "very high" fire dangers across much of Western Europe.

This year will also be a record year for forest fire losses in Germany.

So far this summer, nearly 3,800 hectares of forest have burned in Germany. According to the relevant report, the loss of the forest is at least 20 to 30 million euros, which is 28 times that of 2021. Forest fire destruction in Europe is set to hit a record this year
