Finnish timber imports up 3 per cent in January-July 2023

    In July 2023, Finnish exports of forest products totalled EUR 840 million, which is actually 27 per cent lower than the 2022 monthly average.


    Of the wood imported in July, 59 per cent was pulpwood and a further quarter was woodchips. Logs accounted for 1 per cent and fuelwood and by-product timber for 14 per cent.


    From January to July, timber imports totalled 3.14 million cubic metres, an increase of 3% over the previous year. Pulpwood imports were 28 per cent higher than the previous year. Woodchip imports were down 28 per cent and log imports were down 15 per cent.


    Forestry exports


    Exports of forestry products totalled 7.08 billion euros in January-July, 11 per cent less in real terms than in the same period last year (reduced by the wholesale price index, 1949 = 100).


    In July 2023, the export price of sawn timber was EUR 228 per cubic metre, which was 22% lower in real terms than the average price of the previous year. The price of plywood was 747 euros per cubic metre, 3 per cent higher in real terms than last year's average.
